"LEDs save money" is easy to say and hard to picture — until you see the actual numbers. Here's a straightforward breakdown of where the savings come from and how quickly a switch typically pays for itself.

Where the savings actually come from

1. Lower energy use per bulb. A traditional halogen or incandescent bulb converts most of its energy into heat, not light. An LED equivalent producing the same brightness typically uses 80–90% less energy than incandescent, and 40–60% less than halogen or fluorescent alternatives — the exact figure depends on the specific product, but the direction is consistent across the range.

2. Far longer lifespan. Where a halogen bulb might last around 1,000–2,000 hours, a good-quality LED equivalent is commonly rated for 15,000–25,000+ hours. That means buying replacement bulbs far less often — a meaningful saving on its own before you even factor in energy use.

3. Lower maintenance cost. For commercial and industrial customers, fewer bulb changes means fewer call-outs, less scaffolding or lift hire for hard-to-reach fittings, and less staff time spent on replacements — often a bigger real-world saving than the energy bill itself.

A simple way to estimate your own payback period

You don't need complex modelling to get a useful estimate:

  1. Work out your current running cost — wattage of your existing bulb × hours used per day × your electricity price per kWh.
  2. Do the same for the LED equivalent you're considering.
  3. Subtract the two to get your daily saving per bulb, then multiply by the number of fittings.
  4. Divide the cost of switching (bulb cost, minus any bulbs you'd have had to replace anyway) by your daily saving to get your rough payback period in days.

For a fitting that's on for long hours every day — hallways, warehouses, retail floors, security lighting — this payback period is often surprisingly short, sometimes just a few months, because the energy and replacement savings compound quickly on a high-usage fitting.

It's not just about the electricity bill

  • No mercury disposal costs or compliance risk (relevant if you're converting from fluorescent — see our fluorescent vs LED guide below).
  • Fewer maintenance visits, which matters more than people expect once labour and access costs are included.
  • Dimmable and smart-control options on many LED ranges, opening up further savings by only using full brightness when it's actually needed.

Getting the numbers right for your specific space

Every space is different — a warehouse running lights 16 hours a day will see a very different payback period to a spare room lamp used for an hour an evening. If you want a proper like-for-like comparison for your home or business, our team can put together a free, no-obligation quotation that includes the running-cost comparison, not just the upfront price.
